Hello Moms!
I have a confession to make. I love Mother’s Day! I have another confession. It’s because I plan the day. It’s not that my family isn’t willing to do celebrate me and make me feel special, but I’ve learned over the years, they need some direction, from me!
It may sound anti-climatic but it actually has me waiting with expectation because I have something to look forward to, and depending on what that is, it might be important to PLAN AHEAD! Did you know that Mother’s Day is the most popular day of the year for eating out? If you don’t have a reservation, you don’t want to be eating leftovers.
For the last two years I have gotten calls after Mother’s Day from disappointed moms, and it’s not because they didn’t feel loved, but because the plans for the day weren’t thought out and they had to overcome the temptation to be upset while trying to salvage the day amidst frustration, disorganization and hungry, cranky family members.
In this case, I don’t think we get trapped in unrealistic expectations, but rather, we get caught without a plan.
So what can you do?
I want to empower you to get ahead of the day and consider how YOU want to spend it. Families are pretty willing to rally if they know what you want, but that requires YOU to KNOW what you want.
You may have heard me quote Joan before, a mom of 13, but I think it fits this scenario so well.
“If I had known what to do, I would have done it!”
Oftentimes, that’s the biggest challenge, knowing what to do. So, I am not only giving you permission to consider your dream day, but I am also encouraging you to either plan or delegate to make it happen. Here are some things to consider:
1. EATING IN: Maybe you don’t want to get dressed up to go out. Last year during quarantine one of our local bakery’s offered a boxed brunch so I ordered it. We ate outside on a beautiful day and it was the most amazing brunch, including the best quiche I’ve ever had (from Empire Bakery for those in Dallas – orders start May 2). Remember to think through each meal and have a plan so everyone isn’t looking to you later that day.
2. EATING OUT: If you do plan to eat out, make sure you call ahead for the reservation, or at least assign it to someone else. Remember, it is the most popular day of the year for restaurants.
3. FUN FAMILY ACTIVITY: I love doing something active as a family, especially in nice weather. Go on a bike ride, take a long walk, or play pickle ball. Families love seeing mom’s being playful, so think about what sounds fun to you!
4. MOM TIME: It’s the perfect for guilt free relaxation. After spending the morning with my family, I have on occasion given myself permission to get a massage. These are also fairly booked on Mother’s Day, so make sure you plan ahead. Or, grab that book your’ve been waiting to read and curl up for awhile.
5. GIFTS? You can’t go wrong with cards and flowers. If your love language is Words of Affirmation, tee up your team to put pen to paper! If you want flowers, don’t be shy to be specific about your favorite flowers, colors and florist. You don’t want to be arranging your own bouquet on your day.
FINALLY, Don’t forget about celebrating your own mom. If you want some advice, don’t hesitate to ask her!
Whatever you decide, share your wishes and either plan them or or delegate the task. You will be perfectly positioned to feel loved and celebrated on your day off!
Happy Mother’s Day!
Your Family Coach,
Cristin Parker
